What should I be replacing during a clutch job?

So I’ve pretty much narrowed it down to a throwout bearing going bad on my miata. Since replacing that involves dropping the transmission it would be time to do a full clutch job. Now I am trying to figure out what parts should be replaced during a clutch replacement. So far I have come up with this :

Clutch

Pressure plate

Throwout bearing

Pilot bearing

Flywheel resurface

Im sure there must be more that can be replaced while I’m at it. Those parts are what is found in a typical clutch kit that I can order for around $125. I found a shop that quoted me at around $420 in labor (4.1 hours plus a day for flywheel resurfacing). And they said I can bring my own parts or order through them. Sounds like a fair deal to me. Anyways, if anyone has insight on more parts to change, I’m all ears!

I’d add a rear main seal, since the transmission is out. Do a new clutch slave cylinder since they are $15 and an extended braided stainless clutch line as well which makes bleeding easier and gives you better pedal feel. The line and slave cylinder are easy diy jobs, but its easy to do them off the car, and will save time bleeding the clutch hydraulics anyways.

What were your symptoms? I have a 5spd corolla that makes a high pitch whine above 2500rpm and I’m trying to figure out what it is

Don’t forget new flywheel bolts, though they probably come in the kit.

I’m having intermittent trouble shifting into gears. Tried replacing master and slave cylinders along with new fluid and while it improved shifting, same problem came back. I know for sure that I bled it and it’s not losing fluid so I am confident I did that swap correctly. I get a lot of grinding noise when starting out in first. Sounds like something is getting stuck and is rubbing. Sometimes it will make a whirring sound in neutral and it goes away when I step on the pedal. Still drive able but something is definitely wrong. Next option is to do the clutch job but I don't have the space to do a job like that.

Yeah I had already done the master and slave as my attempt at a cheap fix. Wasn’t losing fluid though so it was not all that likely to be my solution. Slave cylinder was probably going anyways since the repair certainly improved my situation. But the same problem I originally had is still there. It’s like I need extra force to get the car to shift sometimes, which is definitely not good for my synchros.

I didn’t see those with the kits I had looked at. Found an Exedy kit on Amazon and I’m pretty sure it just came with clutch, pressure plate, pilot bearing, throwout bearing, and some clutch tool. Do the bolts get destroyed when removing the old ones or something?

The flywheel resurface isn’t specifically necessary unless there’s uneven wear on the flywheel, your call on that one.

You mentioned already doing a slave cylinder, that would be the only part I’d suggest adding, otherwise your list looks good.

Get shifter bushings since you need to take it out anyways. Draining and refilling when done makes it a bit lighter plus youll be able to tell if you’re eating synchros.

You may don’t need to resurface the flywheel, see if it’s true on your own.

That would be nice if the flywheel doesn’t need resurfacing. Then it would be done in one day!

No, they don’t get destroyed, but they do get a little stretched when they’re torqued down. Some people do reuse them, but it’s standard practice to replace them if the flywheel comes off. Have you ever seen what happens when one of those bolts fails? Best case scenario, you’re going in there again to replace the flywheel. Worst case, it’s going to trash the bell housing and possibly a leg or two. Cheap insurance to replace them while you’re in there.

I’ll certainly replace them if possible then. Bolts ought to be cheap anyways
